Dirty Pirate Hookers: Game 16 Summary

Dirty Pirate Hookers: Game 16

Panthers: 13
DPH: 9

8/28/09, Friday, 6:00 PM @ Mullen's Park

The fourth time is not a charm.

The original game date was postponed by request of the Panthers.  The second game date was postponed because neither team could field regular crews.  The third game date was rained out.  The fourth game date worked perfectly for the Panthers as the Pirates were missing several key players and were forced to play 9 in the field and to take an automatic out.

"So much for favors..." complained manager John C, "I agreed to postpone the first game because a few of their key players couldn't attend--and I didn't mind doing so.  You want to play against your friends.  Then I get stuck playing without my starting lineup..."

In fact, the first postponement was conditional--the DPH agreed to postpone as long as the makeup date wasn't in August or on the weekend.

The original makeup date was set for a Saturday in August.

"Go figure..." said John C, "The league was trying to help out and my team ended up on the short end of the plank..."

A win would have secured top seed for the Hookers in their division--stacked with the league's best teams where any advantage can make a difference.  The loss dropped the Pirates to the 3 seed.

"We'll be fine..." said John C, "With our full crew, we can beat anybody..."

Further frustration came from an odd charge by the Panthers' manager contending the league rained out last Friday at the behest of DPH.  "The league makes their own decisions..." said John C "...they don't listen to me."

The field was soaked; the infield quickly mutating to slick, sticky mud and the rain was progressing to a down-pour. These are not ball playing conditions, rather they are a recipe for disaster.

Finally, after more than a month of waiting, the game would be played.  The weather was clear and the infield was not overly dusty.  This was a perfect day to play ball.

And it was a perfect start through the first 3 innings for the Pirates who held a 1-0 lead on a Justin V triple and a Colleen B RBI infield out.  Playing only 3 females caused DPH manager John C to use his altered lineup--lead-off with a gal to give four guys in a row before the automatic out at the 10 slot.  Shane B, Mike F, Scott J, and Warren S filled the bottom of the lineup.  The Pirates held this lead until the 4th when the Panthers broke through with two runs on a weak fly ball that floated over the fence--a common occurrence at Mullen's.

The Pirates came right back in the bottom of the 4th with 4 runs.  A pair of quick outs by Colleen B and John C shifted the burden to those below and starting with Shaye, they responded with resolute tenacity.  Shaye punched a single by Erika S at third.  Shane B followed with a ground ball single up the middle.  With two strikes off knuckle-baller Benjamin H, Mike F fired a shot over the fence in left earning 3 RBI's.  Scott J re-ignited the inning when he ripped a line drive double into the left-center gap; scoring on a hot bouncer by Warren.  Automatic Out ended her first rally of the game--stranding Warren at first.

The Panthers pushed a run across in the top of the 5th, but the Pirates held a 5-3 lead with the top of their order coming up.  But this was the beginning of the end for the Pirates.  With one out, Justin V reached on an E-6.  Once again, Colleen and John failed to do their job--producing two quick outs and a goose egg for the Pirates.

By the top of the 6th, the Panthers finally exploited the gaps in the Hookers' lonely 3 man outfield.  Feeling the pressure, the Pirate defense forced throws and errors.  At the end of the half inning, the Panthers plated 4.

The Hookers, however, were far from finished and re-engaged.  With one out, Shane B ripped another grounder up the middle for a single.  Mike F was hit by a pitch and smartly accepted first base.  Shane and Mike advanced to 2nd and 3rd on a fly ball and scored on a Warren S single to the right side.  The rally ended when Automatic Out--surely no MVP candidate--stepped to the plate.

With the game knotted at 7, the Panthers sought some distance.  Typically, this is when manager John C makes a pitching move; but, defensively his hands were tied.  The Panthers had Warren figured out and despite not hitting him very hard, had some success in directing their contact.  This allowed them to further exploit the gaps in the Pirates' 3 man outfield.  The Pirates' bumbling defense further compounded problems especially when they played in and were burned by a Joann H bases clearing double over their heads.  "I was moving Justin back, but Warren quick pitched..." said John C, "I know what she can do."  When the Pirates came to bat in the bottom of the 7th, they were down 6 runs.

Employing a swashbuckling style, the Pirates refused to surrender.  Justin V legged a one out triple to ignite a new assault.  Colleen followed with a 4 pitch walk and John C finally did something productive--bouncing an RBI single past second.  A fielder's choice produced the second out and the Pirates realized their chances were dwindling.  With yeoman's effort, Shane lined his 4th hit of the day for an RBI single.  The rally and the game came to a quiet end when a fly ball by Mike F settled into the center fielder's glove.

They played a good, smart game and for 5 innings had a decent team on the ropes. In the end, however, the Pirates were doomed by their 3 man outfield and Automatic Out.

The Pirates finished the regular season with an admirable 13-3 record--a game better than last season--in the league's best division and secured the 3 seed (6th overall) for the playoffs.
