Dirty Pirate Hookers: Game 15 Summary

Dirty Pirate Hookers: Game 15

DPH: 13
Poppy's Place: 4

8/25/09, Tuesday, 7:30 PM @ Coyne Field

The Pirates right the ship and cruise to victory.

Game 2 of the DPH double header pitted the Pirates against Poppy's Place--a struggling team hoping to place themselves among the top teams in the division. The DPH, stumbling a bit in their last 3 games, set out to cement their status as one of the top teams in the division.

The Hookers' Garry S initiated the assault with a two base line drive. The Captain, Christina, launched a fly ball to left allowing Garry to advance to third. A walk by Steve F put runners on 1st and 3rd and a 6-4 fielder's choice by Colleen B earned her an RBI. Poppy's, however, was unfazed and responded quickly with 2 runs of their own courtesy of a pair of singles and a double.

After an uneventful 2nd, scoring resumed in the 3rd when Justin V, John C, and Garry S reached base via single-walk-RBI single. Scott J plated two more runs with a smashed grounder past third raising the Pirates largess to 3 for the inning.

Now, Poppy's has plenty of team speed and they were determined to show it off--perhaps believing they could force the Hookers into mistakes. The Pirates, however, are too savvy and refused to fall into the trap. Poppy's opened their half of the 3rd with a scorched line drive by Scott G to right. John C made the smart play and fielded the ball on a dew covered bounce. He promptly threw to the infield, but the dew soaked ball slipped from his hand and traveled askew to Warren who set himself to back up the play. Scott G, already at 2nd, continued to run to third. The result was an ugly 9-1-5-6-5-7-1-7-1-7-1 pickle. Eventually, Scott G was mercifully tagged out thus violating a (slightly amended) cardinal rule: "Never make an out at third!" An HR by Mike C brought the score to 4-3 and left DPH nursing a slim lead.

The Pirates lusted for more loot and launched another successful raid in the 4th. With one out, Tahnee H ripped a line drive single to center. A fielder's choice swapped Justin for Tahnee and a failed double play attempt allowed Justin to advance to second. John C bombed an opposite field triple to score Justin and then scored on another RBI single by Garry S. Poppy's scored a run on a home run in their half of the 4th to keep the score close at 6-4. But with a Pirate pitching change to John C in the bottom of the 5th, that would be Poppy's last run and a much different fate than their stunning 12 run come from behind victory over the Hookers last year.

The Pirates weren't finished and plundered more loot--tacking on a run in the 5th when Scott J hit an RBI line drive single to score Steve F.

A quiet 6th morphed into a noisy 7th for the Pirates. In stark contrast to Poppy's blistering speed, the Hookers proceeded to prove the merit of a patient on-base approach. Scott J led off the inning with a single base shot through the 5-6 hole. Shaye H and Mike F walked to load the bases for Tahnee who scorched an RBI line drive single. Now the Pirates were in base to base mode with Justin, John, and Garry belting successive RBI, 2-RBI, and RBI singles around the field. A sac fly by Steve F plated the 6th run of the inning and final run of the game for the Pirates.

"We needed a big inning like that..." said Pirate slugger Scott J, "Big innings show what we can do and they put games out of reach..." Unfortunately for Poppy's, Scott's analysis proved remarkably accurate.

The victory--along with a little help and a win in their last game--could snare top seed for the Pirates throughout the playoffs.
