Trying to rebound from a pathetic loss to BushLeague, the Dirty Pirate Hookers squared off against the venerable softballers Team Fred. Team Fred, surging through a 5 game winning streak, looked to make it an easy 6 after dropping 8 runs on the Pirates in the top of the 1st. Starting pitcher Deryl B struggled early with his command while uncharacteristically leaving pitches up in the zone for Team Fred to feast upon. Not until after the game did manager John C learn Deryl B injured his index finger on his pitching hand in a game earlier in the evening. "I wanted to pitch, so I didn't tell him until later..." said Deryl B. "I'm surprised he left me in after the first, though..." "I trust my players..." said John C "and Deryl's right...if I knew he was hurt, he wouldn't have pitched. Given our offensive troubles of late, he was on a short leash anyway...but he gutted through it and limited damage. It was a nice job..."
The Pirates made it a new ball game in their half of the 1st by cutting Team Fred's lead to 1 courtesy of a 7 run explosion. Matt T led off the game for the Hookers with a 6 pitch walk and was advanced to 2B on a Christina C fielder's choice to short. A combination of hustle and her explosive speed netted 1B for Christina. "Things like that are important..." said John C "Christina ran hard out of the box and prevented an out...a lot of the runs we scored in the 1st inning depended on her hustle..." Steve F followed with a bloop RBI single over the second baseman and was succeeded by a Jo Ho single over 2B that loaded the bases for John C who cleared the bases with a booming triple into the right center gap and scored on a Mike F single through the second base hole. Tony D worked a walk and Yvonne L laced a line drive over short to load the bases for Deryl B who smartly punched a line drive over second to plate Mike F and Tony D for the Pirates 6th and 7th runs of the inning.
Deryl then strode to the mound and proceeded to dominate Team Fred in a 1-2-3 top of the 2nd that included a strikeout. The Pirates evened the score in the bottom half of the inning on a Matt T solo HR. "He's really heated up..." said John C, "Matt's out of his slump...we need him hitting if we're going to win...this is good to see..." Team Fred took back the lead in the top of the 3rd with a solo shot of their own and extended their lead to two with another solo shot in the top of the 4th. The Hookers had no answer in the bottom halves of the 3rd and 4th, but held Team Fred scoreless in the top of the 5th with John C recording his 6th, 7th, and 8th PO's of the night and finished his defensive night with 8 PO's and 1 assist on a DP in the 3rd.
The Hookers finally responded in the bottom of the 5th and in the process earned a victory for Deryl B who was pulled for ace closer Ben Ho in the 6th. Christina C led off the 5th with a single and Steve F proceeded to walk putting 2 runners on for John C who punched a high inside pitch between 1B and 2B for a 2 RBI double. John C later scored on a Mike F single who blundered his way to a caught advancing for the third out of the inning. "I saw him bobble the ball and thought I could make it..." said Mike F after the game.
Ben Ho was greeted with 2 singles to start the 6th, but showed the mettle that landed him his big contract by working out of the jam without allowing a run. "It's good to see him pitch to his contract..." mused John C while adding "...it's about time..." The Pirates extended their lead in the bottom of the 6th that opened with a Lisa K single by 3B. An ROE by Yvonne L put 2 runners on for Ben Ho who plopped a HR into the right center gap. Matt T followed with a solo HR to the same area that ended the Hookers scoring at 15 for the night. Out of breath, but bolstered by the big lead, Ben Ho chugged to the mound and worked around an error to start the 7th. With two out, Team Fred would add a run, but a fly ball to Matt T in left ended the game.
At the post game press conference, John C said "After the first inning by Team Fred it would've been easy for us to give up...but we didn't. We came right back at them and brought the game within 1. Deryl recovered from the tough 1st quite nicely and hung on to earn a well deserved win. It was a good victory for the Hookers."
The Dirty Pirate Hookers look to start a new winning streak when they face Infoed Swat in a 6:00 PM make up game at Livingston Field this coming Tuesday, July 29th.
