The Hookers get Bushwhacked!

Dirty Pirate Hookers: Game 9 Summary

BushLeague: 9
Dirty Pirate Hookers: 1

Date: Friday, 07/11/08, Start Time: 6:00P, Park: Livingston Field

Game 9, billed as The Big One, pitted rival factions within the original Dirty Pirate Hookers team against one another. It was a steel cage match with the rusting and decrepit fences of Livingston Field serving as the boundaries. BushLeague vs. DPH...who would reign supreme?

Unfortunately, except for the fun of playing against friends, the game proved a dud with little excitement other than some poor behavior by an isolated few Hookers. "I'd rather not talk about that...it's internal..." said John C, but then elaborated "I wasn't happy with the behavior of a few. It should always be team first...support and respect your team...your teammates...respect your opponents. You need to take an honest self assessment...and then ask 'are my actions a positive or negative for the team...'" When pressed for more detail, John C refused, but he grudgingly added "We just need to score more runs...It's slow-pitch softball...sometimes you need to hit your way past mistakes..."

Surely they needed to score more than 1 anemic run on this night with BushLeague scoring 9.

Deryl B started on the mound for the Hookers and severely curtailed BushLeague's big bats while keeping the speedy Todd S off the bases. BushLeague struck first when Mark M plated Jessica G from 1B on a single and a series of poor Hookers' throws. The Hookers' response was the first of too many goose eggs as Matt T was the only Pirate to stand on 1B in the bottom of the inning. Dan H started Bushleague's 2nd off with a triple over an inexplicably shallow Pirates outfield. A 6-3 fielder's choice plated Dan H for BushLeague's second run of the game. The Hookers response was nil and their half of the 2nd was punctuated solely by a nice Todd S play in LF on a hard hit opposite field fly ball through the Livingston tree by John C.

The 3rd was uneventful other than a play that typified this Pirate effort when Deryl B carelessly earned a caught advancing after hustling his way to first and forcing an E-5. "I wasn't thinking...it was dumb on my part..." Deryl said after the game.

Brett B started BushLeague's half of the 4th with a nice line drive double to center and earned praise from John C. "He's more than a slugger...he shortened his swing up and placed the ball. That was a nice hit..." Brett scored BushLeague's third run on a Jen B single to left. The Hookers responded with a pair of singles by Christina C and Matt T, but once again the offense stalled and the Pirates failed to score.

John C brought his closer Ben Ho in for the top of the 5th who proceeded to walk Todd S. Todd scored on a single by Mark M who was plated by a single from Brett B. The Hookers set themselves up to make a move in the bottom half of the 5th when their first two batters reached base. Jo Ho worked a four pitch walk and John C ripped a too hot to handle opposite field line drive by Mark M at SS. Consecutive outs by Tracy Z and Tony D stymied the budding rally and a Lisa K single went to waste when Joe F flied out to left.

BushLeague took advantage of some well placed hits by Dan H, Dave S, Todd S, and Mark M and sloppy Hooker defense to plate four runs in the top of the 6th. The Pirates finally plated a run when Steve F hit a ground ball double up the middle and was driven in by a sharp Matt T single to left. Ben Ho worked around a Brett B double and Rebecca M single in the top of the 7th to hold BushLeague at 9 runs.

The Hookers appeared ready to make a last inning run when they started the bottom of the 7th with two base runners and no outs. Jo Ho worked another walk and John C hit another hard opposite field fly ball through the Livingston tree that eluded the glove of Todd S. "The overhanging tree in LF and the poison sumac surrounding the field lends to its charm." quipped John C. Three quick, successive outs, however, terminated any hope of a Pirate comeback.

At the post game press conference, much talk centered on John C removing Deryl B from the game. "He was pitching very well...but that's my typical game plan..." When his decision making was called into question John C added "It's easy to be a genius looking backward...but the reason why we lost was lack of offense...plain and simple..." When asked about the state of his team, John C added "This is just another game...I have faith in my team...we're a good team and we'll come out next game and give Team Fred a helluva game..."

To do that, the Pirates better score more than 1 run.

The Pirates face the surging Team Fred--winners of their last 5 games--at Mullen's Field on July 25th, 9:00 PM.
