Dirty Pirate Hookers: Game 8 Summary

With Deryl B in command on the mound and Steve F leading the offensive charge, the Hookers were in capable hands as they defeated The Valentine's 13-7 and continued their winning streak.
The regular season matchup of the '07 Fall classic appeared threatened by a scheduled triple header and the absence of DPH regulars. The foreshortened Hookers lineup forced team management to make some creative lineup/roster moves as John C and Ben Ho were sent to the Towne Tavern/Toyota of CP game, Christina C was on sabbatical in Maine, and the marvelous Matt T was on a rehab assignment in the North Carolina league nursing his depleted confidence back to health. "The sun, heat, and...uhhhhhh...southern charm should serve Matt well..." said manager John C.
Yvonne L was called up from the farm to fill the roster. "She's no throw in," said John C "...she knows how to play. It's a credit to those running DPH player development that we have good talent--depth--like Yvonne..." DPH also exploited their big league roster depth moving Mike F from his typical EH duties to 1B and Joe F from the bench to the field. "These guys are solid players...I wasn't concerned..." said John C while adding "that's why you carry depth."
The Valentine's were determined to make up for their loss to DPH in the Fall Championship and jumped ahead with 2 runs in the top of the 1st while taking advantage of sloppy defense. The Hookers quickly responded with 2 runs of their own when they put 5 runners on base in the bottom of the inning. Deryl B and the Pirate D hung a huge goose egg on The Valentine's half of the 2nd and exploited the opportunity by adding 3 runs in their half. Joe F led off the inning with a sharp line drive to the right of center and after a fly out by Tony D, was scored on a bloop triple to right by Steve F. Erika S scored Steve with a single and singles by Jo Ho and Pat S worked to push Erika home.
The Valentine's scored an unearned run in the top of the 3rd for which the Hookers had no response. As if it was Groundhog's Day, The Valentine's added another unearned run in the top of the 4th. This time the Pirates maintained status quo by adding a run of their own on a Pat S double to center and a Tracy Z RBI single to the right side. The Valentine's earned their first run of the game in the top of the 5th, but the Hookers truncated their elation by hanging a 3 spot in the bottom of the inning. After two outs by Yvonne L and Joe F, Tony D grounded a single through the left side hole. Energized by the 2 out hit, the Hookers responded by adding a Steve F RBI double, an Erika S RBI single, and a Mike F RBI double that fostered a damaging 3 spot. When reviewing the game with his players, John C wryly commented "Crooked numbers trump straight ones anytime..."
The Valentine's meekly responded with another run in the top of the 6th, but the Hookers worked to push the game further out of reach by adding another 4 runs. Pat S roped a double to start the bottom of the 6th and Tracy took advantage of a fielder's choice and hustled her way to first. With two on and nobody out, Deryl B hit a single just past SS and Yvonne L hit a sac fly to score Pat S. Joe F added a single and after Tony D bounced into an RBI earning fielder's choice, Steve F plated the Hooker's final two runs with a double to the right side.
Down 13-6, The Valentine's come back was stalled at 1 run in the top of the 7th as the Hookers upped their record to 5-3. "It was a good game for the team..." said John C. "We were missing a lot of players and they really stepped it up...I'm proud of them..."
The Pirates will face Bush League next week to see if they can put a dent in their impressive record.
