Dirty Pirate Hookers: Game 5 Summary
Dirty Pirate Hookers: 10
The Dynasty: 1
Date: 06/06/08, Start Time: 6:00P, Park: Bishop Maginn
The Hookers snapped out of the doldrums and their 3 game losing streak with a crisp, efficient 10-1 victory over The Dynasty. The Pirates relied on their proven approach of strong pitching, solid defense, and timely hitting.
Matt T led off the game with a sharp ground ball single to the left side. The Pirates scored quickly with an Erika S double plating Matt T and a Tony D double scoring Erika. Despite walks by Lauren C and Steve F, the Hookers scored no more in the 1st. John C--pitching for the first time since May 9 when DPH played Shamrock's Roofing--made good on the 2 runs working a quick 1-2-3 bottom of the 1st against The Dynasty.
The Hookers sputtered along in the 2nd and 3rd with a walk from Erika S and a single from the redoubtable Tony D as their sole offensive testament. John C and the Hooker D responded in kind surrendering only two hits over the same stretch. The Pirates offense reignited in the top of the fourth with a single-walk-RBI single-string of consecutive on base plate appearances by Pat S, Jo Ho, and the sintering Steve F. A Lisa K ground ball to 3B scored Jo Ho and a sharp, Deryl B line drive single drove in Steve F for the 3rd and final Hooker run of the inning. The Dynasty nicked John C for their only run of the game in the bottom of the 4th using a Tony K single and a Jeff P triple.
Despite another Tony D base hit in the 5th, the Hookers would not score again until the 6th when Pat S and Jo Ho led off the inning with back to back walks. Unswayed by The Dynasty changing pitchers--Jen B to Tom B--Mike F ripped a RBI ground ball double and Christina C blistered a RBI line drive single that sequentially scored Pat and Jo Ho. Joe F continued the putsch by lifting a sacrifice fly to left that scored Mike F and was followed by a Lisa K walk. The Hookers 5 run 6th wasn't finished until a single by Deryl B scored Christina and a bases loaded walk by Erika S plated Lisa K--their 10th and final run.
Ace closer, Ben Ho, relieved John C in the bottom of the 5th and continued the Pirates' oppressive pitching through the 7th. In a textbook performance of efficacy and effectiveness, Ben Ho sliced through the Dynasty offense giving up only 2 weak singles while further contact was limited to weak pop-ups and 2 double plays. For his 20 pitch troubles, Ben Ho earned his second save of the season. "It's good to get back to the way the team was built...the way it was scripted" said Ben Ho in what some thought was a thinly veiled shot at manager John C's recent handling of the Hookers' pitching staff.
When asked his thoughts on the game John C said "It's good to get this win...we've had some tough luck over the past few games. I was happy with our overall performance this game...we just need to get a couple of our big hitters going and DPH is ship-shape and bristol fashion..." When told about ace closer Ben Ho's comment John C's face reddened and he paused before saying "...I'm trying to win ball games here...I put out the best lineup I can...I stand by my decisions. Personally, I think you guys like drama...it sells. For my part, if he's going to pitch like he did tonight, he can pretty much say any damn thing he wants..."
In that there is no argument. This win clearly belonged to the Pirates' pitchers and defense--who used only 56 pitches over 7 innings to limit The Dynasty to 7 hits and 1 run.
The Pirates look to even their record with a win against Xerox in a 6PM game at Legion field tonight, Friday, 6/13.
