Dirty Buc Ho's: Game 2 Summary
Time Warner Warriors: 1
Dirty BUC Ho's: 18
Date: 06/01/08, Start Time: 9:30A, Park: Bishop Maginn
The Dirty Buc Ho's returned to the field Sunday after a two-week sojourn to take on the Time Warner Warriors at Bishop Maginn field. The Ho’s (2-0) were down a few shipmates as Captain John Mauvebeard was forced to employ a split squad to contend with a league scheduled DBH/DPH conflict. First Mates Mark M and Mark E fearlessly took the wheel and steered the Ho's to an easy victory.
The Warriors (1-2) fell victim to the classic Ho combination of good pitching, solid defense, and timely hitting to all fields. Mark E (2-0) got the start for the second straight game and shut down the Warriors in a one-two-three 1st as the ball failed to leave the infield.
On offense the Ho’s wasted no time going to work as newbie Ho, Eric D, lead off with a booming line drive to right center for a double while alertly picking up an extra base on a misplay. Kim F singled Eric home for the first run of the game with a liner up the middle. After a rare out by Mark Mouth, Lauren C had her first line drive single of a perfect 4-4 day. Steve F then ripped a two-run double in his Sunday season debut. After a groundout by Jenn B, Joey F kept the inning alive by reaching base on a hard hit grounder down the third base line that, ominously, was misplayed by the Warrior’s 3B. The Ho’s took advantage of the miscue and made the Warriors pay as a Jo Ho single was followed by back to back booming doubles to center by Mike F and Mark E that plated three runs while placing the Warriors in a 8-0 hole from which they wouldn’t recover.
On defense, the Ho’s committed two crucial blunders that led to the Warrior’s sole run. After a lead off single, a female Warrior popped up between first and second. Confusion ensued between Mike F at 1B and Lauren C at 2B with the ball dropping out of Lauren’s glove. When asked about the play, Mike F said "It was my mistake…I was late in my decision to go back and cover the bag. I should have let her get to the ball right away…by being slow in my reaction time I hung her out to dry."
Unfazed, Mark E induced a grounder to short. Mark M made a diving stab and tagged 2B to get the lead runner. In his zealousness to bail out his teammate, Mark M threw high over Mike F’s head at 1B and missed the double play. The runner was allowed second base on the overthrow while subsequently scoring on a bloop single to right. Undaunted, Mark E picked up his teammates and quickly retired the next two batters.
Although disappointed with their defense, the Ho’s maintained their offensive charge in the bottom of the 2nd. Lauren C and Steve F led off the BUC’s half of the inning with back-to-back singles; while an E-7 on a Joe F fly ball scored Lauren. Jo Ho walked to load the bases and once again Mike F and Mark E cleared them with a respective triple and double. The third inning was relatively quiet for both sides as the Warriors went down in order and the Ho’s were held to a Mark M solo home run to right.
After another scoreless inning in the top of the 4th, the BUC’s added 4 more runs in their half of the inning. With one out, Mike F doubled to left and scored on a Mark E single completing a perfect day at the plate for the pair. Following a Kim F single, Mark M completed the BUC’s offensive assault monstrous 3-run homer to center.
Anxious to cheer on their Dirty Pirate shipmates and with grog waiting, the Ho’s were motivated for a short game. After some officiating generosity and a glimmer of offensive hope on a deep drive to CF, the game was mercifully brought to an end as Steve F settled under the ball and squeezed his glove for the third and final out.
Given his performance on the mound and at the plate, it was readily apparent that Mark E led the way for the Ho’s. "I felt great today" Mark said afterward, "I was getting all my pitches across and forcing them to swing at my pitches nearly every time…" Regarding his day at the plate, Mark E continued: "I love my role on this team. We are packed with offensive skill throughout the lineup, and it allows me to relax and not try to do too much with my own at-bats. As you saw today, in that situation I flourish."
Despite the lopsided win, the BUC’s see stormy seas looming on the horizon in the form of an impending duel with archrival Blitzkrieg. In what will surely add more tension to an already emotion packed game, Blitzkrieg—always a formidable team—improved during the offseason with the addition of DPH’er Todd S.
The Dirty BUC Ho’s—the Sunday Dirty Pirate Hookers—have tasted defeat only once and that was at the hands of Blitzkrieg. Despite the potential to be the definitive Sunday game of the season, the matchup suffers from poor scheduling on the part of the league—especially considering the 9:30A start time.
When asked about the upcoming game, John C said "To me it’s the third game of the season. The drama is for you guys…for our part we’re going to play them like any other team—hard, to win, and to have fun."
Only time will tell if that will be enough to score a victory.—MF with JC contributing
