Dirty Pirate Hookers: Game 7 Summary

JLA: 10
Dirty Pirate Hookers: 14

Date: Tuesday, 06/17/08, Start Time: 6:00P, Park: Bishop Maginn

The Dirty Pirate Hookers continued their winning streak with an anxious 14-10 victory over the last place JLA. Unimpressed with the Hookers' current 3 game run, JLA fought to the end while playing like a championship team. Interestingly, several Hookers can trace their roots back to the original JLA team either directly, as in the case of Deryl B, or indirectly as can Tracy Z and John C who played for Bad Company--started by disgruntled former members of JLA.

Deryl B was the starting pitcher for the Pirates and he looked to build on his dominant start against Xerox. Despite an E-8 on the first play of the game that put a runner on third, Deryl B worked out of the impossible jam by retiring the next three batters in a row while stranding the runner. "You don't see that very often...especially in slow pitch..." said John C. The Hookers looked to capitalize on the scoreless half and started in good fashion with a line drive single to left by the resurgent Matt T. A fielder's choice substituted Erika S for Matt T at 1st and brought up Steve F who wields the hottest bat on the Hookers. Steve laced a line drive single to right that put runners on first and third. Two quick outs by the Hooker offense truncated the rally, however.

JLA broke the shutout by manufacturing a run in the top of the 2nd. Kyle grounded a single past short and alertly took second on the lethargic Hooker D. A 5-3 ground out moved him to third and allowed him to score on a 6-3 ground out. For the bottom half of the inning, the Hookers were once again set up when Lisa K reached first on an E-5 and John C punched a ground ball single by second base. With runners on first and second and nobody out, the Hookers failed to push across a run when their offense stumbled with three sequential outs.

JLA took advantage of the Hookers offensive insipidness in the top of the 3rd adding 4 runs to their ledger. An E-6 that allowed Adam to reach base was followed by successive singles courtesy of Paul and Matt. Adam scored on a 10-3 line drive up the middle and Greg cleared the bases with a 3 run HR to deep center. For their part, the Hookers responded with a single run in the bottom of the third when Ben Ho reached on an E-9, moved to third on a Matt T single, and scored on a 5-4 fielder's choice.

JLA refused to relent adding two more runs in the top of the fourth. A single by Dave and a triple by Adam plated 1 run, and an E-3 plated the 2nd. As if caught in some relentless Groundhog's Day, the Hookers responded by pushing across a solitary run. Christina C lined a single up the middle to start the inning and was followed by a sharp line drive out to deep right by Mike F. Lisa K hit into a fielder's choice that eliminated Christina from the bases and brought up John C who pounded a ground ball through Sarah H's wickets at second base. Seizing the opportunity, Lisa K scored on the E-4.

For the top of the 5th, John C replaced Deryl B with Ben Ho on the mound; moved Matt T to SS for Tony D; put Pat S in LF, Joe F in RF, and himself at SF. "They were playing well...I don't expect people to be happy when they come out..." said John C while adding "...but they're good people...they'll support their team and root for their teammates. Sometimes it's tough...I have to get everybody playing time..." For the top of the 5th and 6th innings, the Hookers held JLA scoreless and to one hit.

The Hookers' offense finally responded in the bottom of the 5th when Joe F led off the inning with a line drive single over short. Jo Ho followed that with a ground ball to deep short resulting in JLA holding the ball on a fielder's choice.. Pat S flied out in his first PA and was followed by a sacrifice fly to center by Ben Ho. Matt T smashed a line drive back to the mound at Dave--his hand absorbing the brunt of the collision. After a brief pause in the game, the Hookers responded with a stream of 4 hits--two RBI singles from Erika S and Steve F and two RBI doubles from Christina C and Mike F. The score stood at 8-7 when the Hookers finally grabbed the lead.

The Pirates pounced on JLA's failure to score in the top of the 6th and plundered 6 more runs. John C led off the bottom of the 6th with a deep fly ball HR to right and was followed by 3 singles from Tracy, Joey, and Jo Ho. With the bases loaded, Pat S responded in Pavlovian fashion by crushing a line drive, grand slam, HR over Kyle's head in left. "You can't hit a ball harder than that..." said Ben Ho in admiration of Pat's shot. The Hookers weren't finished scoring until Steve F scored Matt T with an RBI single for the Hookers 14th and last run of the game.

In the top of the 7th, JLA refused to go down easily with back to back singles by Paul and Matt. A sac fly by Sarah scored Matt and a two run bomb to left-center by Greg added two more runs. After Sara C grounded out, Kyle ended the game on a hard hit line drive into the glove of John C playing in the left-center gap. "I don't know why the heck they only have one win..." said John C, "...they played a helluva game out there today..." Indeed. JLA put a scare into the Hookers and held the lead for 4 1/2 innings...until the Pirates offense finally broke through.

The Hookers look to continue their streak against a familiar foe--the mighty Softballs--on Wednesday, June 25 at Legion Field.
