Dirty Pirate Hookers: Game 1 Summary

Albany Med: 8
Dirty Pirate Hookers: 9
Date: 05/01/08, Start Time: 6P, Park: Legion Field

In an exciting opening day match-up, the Dirty Pirate Hookers clashed with their longtime foe, Albany Med. Unlike the 19-7 mercy rout of their last squabble, the Pirates nearly found themselves shipping home stripped of their loot. Albany Med and the Dirty Pirate Hookers have played 5 times, and the Pirates have plundered a victory in each strife. "They're a good team...we know each other well..." said John C, "Some teams opt out of playing us; Albany Med goes right after it..."

The Docs, casting aside any Hippocratic pretense, struck first by bombing the marauders with 7 runs through the first 4 innings. Pace, pitching for Albany Med, forced the Pirates' big guns to misfire and surrendered only 3 runs through the same stretch. "They were laying off the low drop...I was forced to bring it up and they were hitting it..." said Deryl B, the Pirates starting pitcher who usually dominates Albany Med. Pace had no such problems and pitched to the outer limits of the strike zone while inducing fly balls and pop-ups that were easily swallowed by the big field and Albany's eager defense.

The first inning started with a nice play by the Hooker's 1st baseman, Christina C, when she used her body to block a hard grounder by Albany Med's powerful lefty, Grolle. After another quick out, the Docs smashed two identical line drives to the left of a diving Tony D at SS that put runners on 1st and 2nd. Conrad followed by pushing a shot past Ben Ho at 2B to drive in a run. The Hookers had no response in the bottom of the inning and went down meekly except for a Christina single through the middle. Deryl struggled to find the zone in the 2nd, but Albany Med had no regrets and forced the Hookers to pay for his pains with a 4 run barrage capped by a 3 run triple courtesy of Pace.

The Hookers, annoyed by the assault, launched a counter salvo, but fell short mustering only 3 runs. Pat S led off the Pirate's half of the 2nd with a booming double and scored when Mike F squirted a grounder through the middle for an RBI single. Lisawitz followed with a single that put 2 runners on for Deryl B who helped his cause by crushing a RBI double over the Docs' drawn in OF. In an effort to press Albany Med's defense, Lisawitz darted home, but was tagged out after a series of surgical throws. Jo Ho mashed a RBI single driving in Deryl, while Tony D and Steve F shortened the plank by loading the bases on consecutive singles. The Pirates charge ended when Matt T laced a line drive into Sal's glove at short.

The 3rd was quiet for both sides, but Albany Med broke the truce in the 4th on a walk by Josh and a 2 run blast to RF by Grolle. The Docs now led 7-3 and sensed an end to the one sided nature of this rivalry after holding the Pirates to a Mike F single in the home half of the inning. John C countered with his ace closer, Ben Ho, in the 5th who tore though the Docs with no quarter. The Pirates, rejuvenated, responded as Tony D led the charge on a daring double up the middle and a head first slide into 2nd. Despite an RBI double by Matt T and three consecutive singles by Christina, Ben Ho, and Erika, the Hookers could only muster 2 runs after Pat S flew out deep to left.

The 6th was a repeat of the 5th as Ben Ho cut through the Docs' offense and the Hookers threatening another big inning. After four consecutive singles by Lauren C, John C, Lisawitz, and Deryl who drove in 2 runs, the Hookers tied the game at 7 with nobody out, 2 runners on, and Jo Ho at the plate lusting to score more. She blasted a shot at Pace who snared it and doubled up a surprised Deryl at 1st. A Tony D fly ball to left truncated another Pirate charge.

With the game in extra innings, Ben Ho strode back to the mound ready to drop more Docs. After two quick outs and a 1-2 count on Grolle, Ben Ho fired inside to the lefty and induced a soft ground out to 1st. With the Hookers racing off the field, Ben Ho was called for an illegal pitch. Grolle made good use of his second chance and crushed a line drive down the 1st base line, past Lauren in right for a HR. After a quick out by Kim, the Pirates found themselves in a 8-7 hole needing to score. The Hookers took advantage of a tense Albany Med defense and tied the game by exploiting 3 Albany Med errors.

Both sides went scoreless in the 8th and as Albany Med went to bat in the 9th, the new enemy was dwindling daylight. Ben Ho fearlessly sliced through the heart of the Docs' lineup in the top of the 9th and gave the Pirates another chance to win it with one run. Deryl led off the Hookers 9th with a single, but after a deep fly ball out to center by Jo Ho, he was FC'd at 2nd on a Tony D bouncer to 1st. A double by Steve F moved the winning run to 3rd with Matt T coming to the plate seeking vengeance for a frustrating game. Retribution came from a well placed bouncer past 2nd that drove in the winning run and sent the Pirates into a swashbucklin' cheer.

When asked about the game, John C gushed over his defense: "It was a hell of a game...they nearly had us, but we hung tough. Our defense and Ben Ho's pitching were the key...I can think of three plays...in the 8th, Tony cut off a sure double and nearly got Pace at 1st...that was big. Then...in the 9th, Lauren cut down a tricky line drive and held Amir to a single--I've seen that same hit played into a homerun before. That was great. And Deryl snared a hot line drive by Sal at 3rd. Awesome. All game we hit into tough luck...left the bases loaded a couple times with good batters up. But Ben Ho was stupendous...he and our defense shut them down and gave our offense the chance to win it. It's too bad that somebody had to lose it [the game], but I'm happy as heck with the result..."

Albany Med's disenchantment with the Hookers was best summed up by one of their own: "Individually, you guys [the Pirates] are great, but when we see your jerseys...as a team...we really hate you..."

In this lopsided rivalry, higher praise is harder to find.

The Hookers' next game is scheduled for Friday, May 9, 6:00 PM @ Ridge #2 versus the Shamrocks.
