Round One Summary; Fall 2007

NYSBA Heavy Hitters: 3
Dirty Pirate Hookers: 16

Round One was a rematch of the Hooker's final regular season game against the NYSBA Heavy Hitters.

A two pronged attack consisting of dominant pitching and a bruising offense allowed the Hookers to once again overwhelm the Heavy Hitters. Mark E and Deryl B combined their effort to toss an 8 hitter through 4 1/2 mercy shortened innings. The first inning saw the start of frustration for the Heavy Hitters when Tracy Z snared a hot ground ball on the third baseline that effectively ended the Hitters' hope to strike first. In typical Hookers style, the offense stumbled initially after Jess sharply grounded into a double play and Matt weakly grounded to the pitcher. The Hookers came to life in the second inning after a single and a double by Erika and Mark M. Mike F, capitalizing on a second life when the Hitters 1B failed to put away a weak pop foul, drove in the first two runs of the game on a blast to CF. Christina and Jo Ho drove in the Hookers' last runs of the second. The Hookers were poised to score more runs when the Hitters 1B made a nice play on a hot line drive by John C.

The hitters broke through in their half of the 3rd, aided by the Hookers' uncharacteristic sloppy fielding. Unfazed, Mark E picked up his team and shut down the Hitters 4 and 5 batters to end the away half of the inning. Jess started things for the Hookers half of the 3rd with an impressive come from behind walk. Matt promptly doubled setting the table for Mark M, who drove a massive blast to deep center that plated two runs with Jess scoring on trick 3B coaching by John C; Mark M plated himself through smart, aggressive base running.

After being rudely greeted by a line drive single to left, Deryl B settled down and squashed any hope the Hitters had to score in the 4th. Behind a smart opposite field double by Deryl B, the Hookers' offense exploded in the 4th. A fancy stutter step by the crusty veteran confused the Hitters SS who decided to hold the ball rather than make the play at 1B. Christina preyed on his confusion running hard out of the box to earn an odd infield hit. A SF by Jo Ho led to the Hookers' first run of the inning. Desiring not to be upstaged by Jo Ho, Ben Ho hit an opposite field 2R, 2 out, bomb to right. John C refused to kill this inning and smashed an opposite field double. Todd S followed that up with a strong line drive triple up the middle. Jess picked up Todd with a hard single and Matt and Mark M finished off the Hookers' 9 run 4th with a pair of two run HR's. The Heavy Hitters scratched out a run in the top of the 5th in a futile attempt to continue the game. It was the Hookers' night, however, and a quick ending hung in the cold air.

The Hookers celebrated afterward with an incredible confection artistically crafted by Christina. Three layers of dense chocolate cake separated by raspberry preserves, covered with a luscious chocolate ganache, and adorned with a white chocolate team logo provided a sweet, rich ending to a satisfying night. While pleased with their Wednesday night victory, the Hookers realize that there is plenty of work left to do and a very tough team to face on Monday.
