Andy's Coed C Playoffs, North Semi Finals: Pirates grind out a thriller, advance to Championship

Date: Thursday, September 5
Field: Mullen's Park
Time: 7:30P
Weather: Clear, cool

Andy's Coed C, Semis:

(5)Chase This: 10
(1)Dirty Pirates: 12

Despite stumbling and bumbling out of port, the Pirates righted the ship and downed Chase This 12-10 to advance to the Coed C North Championship.

With John C in the circle, a combination of soft Pirate defense and some good luck provided Chase This the impetus to jump out to an early 9 - 3 lead over the first three innings. Notwithstanding a paucity of well struck balls, Chase This seemed to find every hole and virtually steered hits inside the fair line. An ill timed error and poor pitch also led to a 3 run HR in the top of the second to push the game to a 7 - 1 Chase This lead. The Pirates matched 2 additional Chase This runs in the top of the 3rd, but found their ship sinking 9 - 3.

John C went to the bullpen early and brought in Garry S. "We needed a change..." said manager John C, while adding "and something to jolt the team." The move provided just that. The top of the 4th opened on a dubious note when John C had an awful read on a well struck fly ball to RC, but a strong throw to the cutoff limited the damage.

Garry S proceeded to get two quick outs on liners to third and himself and the final out on a just missed HR to left. Garry S succeeded in hanging the Pirates first 0 on Chase This. The Pirates failed to take advantage of the opportunity, however, and the game continued apace into the 5th: 9 - 3.

Although faced with the task of navigating around a 1 out error in the 5th, Garry S turned another quick inning and provided the Pirates with another 0 and opportunity. The Pirates were due to march their male trio to the plate in the bottom of the 5th, and found themselves well poised to take advantage of the break. Justin R started the rally with a laced line drive off the Pitcher's thigh. "It was outside..." said Justin R, "I knew I could crush it..."

Chase This' pitcher quickly recovered from the blow to face John C who walked on 5 pitches. "I'll happily take a BB in that situation...we needed base runners." With a smoldering Pete G on deck, the BB was well timed. Pete G smoked a double and with an E7 assist, plated two. A Dave G grounds rule double plated Pete G for the Pirates final run of the inning.

The game was now 9 - 6 and a formerly raucous Chase This sensed a change in the tide. The Pirates gave up a run in the top of the 6th, but quickly resumed their offensive attack. Garry S and Tabetha Z opened the bottom half with a pair of singles followed by a blistered line drive double off the bat of Justin R. A throwing error by the right center fielder allowed Tabetha Z to score and Justin R to advance to third. The Pirates were now trailing 9 - 8 with John C at the plate.

John C ripped a grounder toward Chase This' 2B who turned her head while trying to flee. Incredibly, the ball jumped up, struck the back of her glove and fell at her feet. Somehow cognizant of the proceedings, she collected herself, picked up the ball and completed the 4 - 3 play. Ever alert, Justin R scored to tie the game 9 - 9.

The Pirate attack continued as Pete G doubled and Lauren D singled to bring Dave G to the plate. On the second pitch of the AB, Dave G launched a 3 run shot into LF. The Pirates now held a 12 - 10 lead with the middle of Chase This lineup due up.

Chase This opened the 7th with a single and a fielders choice. Another single and a walk loaded the bases for their male trio. A pop-up behind second was caught by Justin R. "He was the only one who could catch that..." said John C, "It was well placed. Justin ranged far to catch it..." Thinking--or hoping--the ball would fall in, the runner on third broke for home and was doubled up on an appeal at third to end the game.

The Pirates will face the Moose Knuckles in the Championship game on Monday, September 9.

2013 Media League Playoffs, Finals: Game 2 Suspended, Bottom 4th

Date: Tuesday, September 3
Field: Nott Road, Field #5
Time: 6:00P
Weather: Cloudy, Cool

Media League Championship; best of 3:

(1) EYS: 8
(5) Skyline Diner: 4

Game Suspended in Bottom of the 4th, 1 out, runners on 1st and 3rd.

Playing on Nott 5, EYS sluggishly pursued a sweep of Skyline Diner. Behind good pitching and solid defense, EYS was up 8 - 0 on Skyline going into the bottom of the 4th. With an assist from an erratic K zone, Eric G struggled with his command allowing Skyline to line drive their way back into the game plating 4 runs. The game was suspended when a player was injured by an errant throw. Needless to say, players from both sides expressed concern and hope for a quick recovery.

Game 2 resumes 6:00P, Monday, September 9 at Nott 4.

Andy's Coed C Playoffs, Round 1: Pirates boot Brasky's to advance to North Semi's

Date: Thursday, August 29
Field: Field of Dreams
Time: 6:00P
Weather: Sunny, hot

Andy's Coed C, Round 1:
(8)Bill Brasky's: 4
(1)Dirty Pirates: 12

On a night when upsets were the norm, the Pirates played true to their top seed form by taking a 12-4 round one victory from Bill Brasky's (8). Brasky's was not a typical (8) seed having played three one run games against the other top seeds over the course of the season. Despite that, the Pirates never ceded control and held the lead throughout the game.

The Pirates' offense was sluggish over the first 4 innings, but on the back of a Pete G home-run, solid contributions by the Pirettes, and typically staunch pitching and defense, the Pirates held a 4-2 lead going into the 5th.

Pirate bats emerged from their slumber in the 5th and 6th powered by home-runs from Dave G and Pete G. Garry S continued his early inning pitching mastery over Brasky's allowing only 2 runs from the 5th through 7th innings.

The Pirates set sail to the North Division semi-finals next week to face (5) seed Chase This; date TBA.

Remaining North:
(5) Chase this @ (1) Dirty Pirates
(6) Voodoo @ (2) Moose Knuckles

Remaining East:
(8) War & Peace @ (5) Breaking Balls
(3) 459-TAXX @ (2) Philly Bawgo Fah

2013 Media League Playoffs, Finals: EYS pummels Skyline; take game 1

Date: Wednesday, August 28
Field: Nott Road, Field #3
Time: 6:00P
Weather: Sunny, hot

Media League Championship; best of 3:
(5) Skyline Diner: 5
(1) EYS: 25

EYS eradicated any chance for an exciting opening game of the 2013 Media League Championship by stomping on Skyline Diner early and often. After the second inning, EYS held a firm, but not insurmountable 6 run lead. The game turned into a laugher in the 4th after EYS methodically dumped a 9 run inning on Skyline to take a 17-3 lead. Skyline essentially capitulated game 1 to EYS at this point and the race was on to record 9 more outs before darkness set in.

News

***Long time EYS veteran shortstop, Kevin S, re-aggravated his oblique and was forced to leave the game early. Justin "Pigpen" R stepped in at short and immediately lived up to his moniker.

***Very long time EYS veteran catcher, Brandi G, tested her surgically repaired knee in the bottom of the 6th. The result was a 4-3 force, but the ball was hard struck and Brandi ran well.

***This is the 6th consecutive Championship series for the EYS franchise dating back to their MisFits and MisFits-Probation days. Deron S, Brandi G, John C, and Kevin S have been stewards for and stalwarts of the team for the stretch of success. Deron S has been with the team nearly since its genesis in 2002, Brandi G joined a bit later, John C was recruited in 2007, and Kevin S joined in 2008.

The Media League Championship Series resumes on Tuesday, September 3, at Nott Road Field #4.

UPDATED

Date: Monday, August 26

Time: 6:00P
Weather: Rainy, warm, humid

Media League Semi-Finals; best of 3:

(1) EYS: 15
(5) Maggie's Cafe: 6

Between raindrops, EYS sweeps Maggie's to advance to the Media League Championship round. EYS commenced play a little flat allowing Maggie's to play a tight game for the first few innings. EYS quickly regained form and created some distance in the forth. After the 5th, EYS held a commanding 9 run lead while trading runs with Maggie's to keep the game out of reach.

EYS plays in their 6th consecutive Media League Finals and hosts C2 Bombers or Skyline Diner on Wednesday, August 28, Nott Road Field #4.
Come and catch the action.

2013 Spring/Summer Sunday League Championship, Games 2 & 3: Pirate Cannoneers Blast Shockers, Loot Championship

Date: Sunday, August 25
Field: Mullen's Park
Time: 1:30P, 3:00P
Weather: Sunny and hot

American Legion Sunday Championship

Game 1:
(1) Dirty Pirates: 15
(2) CDA Shockers: 3

Game 2:
(2) CDA Shockers: 2
(1) Dirty Pirates: 18

Down a game in this best of three series, the Pirates charted a perilous course to their second consecutive Sunday Coed B Championship. Led by Pete G, Pirate cannoneers were determined to blast away any drama from these games. Their blunt strategy was brutally effective as the Pirates dominated the day 33-5, 8 HRs to 2, 39 hits to 18, .520 BA to .310, .586 OBA to .355, .867 SLG to .466, and 1.453 OPS to .821. Further, the Pirates scored in every offensive inning save one.

Combined with a determined, stifling defense led by third baseman Justin "Pigpen" R, the Pirate victory was complete and thorough. A Pete G walk-off two run HR served as an exclamation point on a day of ascendance by the Pirates.

Congratulations on a great season, Pirates!

2013 Media League Playoffs, Semi-Finals: EYS uses a 9 run 1st to tromp Maggie's 17-6

Date: Wednesday, August 21
Field: Nott Road, Field #4
Time: 6:00P
Weather: Sunny, warm, humid

Media League Semi-Finals:

(5) Maggie's Cafe & Play It Again Sports vs. (1) EYS Clifford Wealth Mgmt Svcs

Maggie's: 6
EYS: 17

The Media League Semi-finals started just fine for Maggie's with their first two batters reaching base. EYS pitcher, Eric G, quickly settled down and leaned on his defense to put an end to the threat. As it turned out, that was the best chance Maggie's had at taking a lead.

EYS worked through their lineup to plate a devastating 9 runs in the bottom of the 1st. Maggie's never recovered from the damage and managed only 6 runs the rest of the way despite lacing several hot shots. The big field and stifling outfield defense, however, curtailed any threat to EYS. EYS plated 8 more runs along the way to ensure Maggie's fate was sealed.

Maggie's plays host to EYS for game 2 of this best of three series on Monday, August 26, Nott Road, Field #3.

2013 Spring/Summer Sunday League Championship, Game 1: Pirates Battle Back, Fail To Plunder Loot

Date: August 18
Field: Mullen's Park
Time: 12:00P
Weather: Sunny and warm

The Dirty Pirates battle back to take a one run lead in the 5th, but a 4 run 6th, and 7 run 7th by the Shockers stalled their comeback.

The Pirates, playing flat while suffering from "tournament hangover" surrendered game 1 to the Shockers. John C started in the circle and once again struggled with his command. "It's not walks..." said John C, "I'm missing my locations in the zone. There's little room for error..." John C gave up 6 runs in 3 innings of work before turning the game over to Garry S who immediately dropped a pair of 0's on the Shockers allowing the Pirates to take a 1 run lead at the end of the 5th.

The Shockers responded with 4 runs in the top of the 6th to put more pressure on the Pirates. The Pirates regrouped and battled back to a tie after plating 3 runs in the bottom half of the 6th. The Shockers dropped a devastating 7 runs on the Pirates in the top of the 7th with a combination of power and an amazing, if unsustainable ability to hit holes for singles. In fact, the Shockers managed to hit grounders through the infield almost at will. That Garry S is an extreme fly ball pitcher makes the feat all the more impressive. The Pirates could only muster 1 run in the bottom of the 7th for a 17-11 loss.

The Pirates will battle for their playoff lives when both teams meet for the second game of the championship series.

Game 2 and, if necessary, game 3 take place next Sunday, August 25 at Mullen's Park. Game times are TBA.

The Dirty Pirates Loot Booze To Plunder The Division Title

The Dirty Pirates set sail to their crossover skirmish and plundered Booze on First to loot the division title with a stress-free 12-2 victory.

The Pirates stormed the Booze defenses with 5 runs in the first two innings; scored 4 in the fourth and 3 more in the last two innings for an easy victory. After blastin' Moose Knuckles--the Pirates closest divisional rivals--19-11 on Monday, the Pirates were relaxed and jovial as they battled Booze.

The Pirates finished their season relatively early and now must wait for the play of final divisional games for final seeding. Regardless the results, the Pirates have an unbreakable grip on the one seed in the North/East division.

"The one and done Andy's playoff format makes things difficult, but securing the one seed is an advantage..." said Cap'n John C. "We have some tough games ahead..."

The Pirates do, indeed, have some tough games ahead and the long wait before they battle again will not help them.

"Most of us will skirmish through the break..." said John C, "...but this unit won't battle together for a bit. It's on us to stay sharp."

Meanwhile, the Pirates will careen their Schooner and strip the barnacles from the hull. They will need every advantage when post season skirmishes commence.
