2013 Spring/Summer Sunday League Championship, Game 1: Pirates Battle Back, Fail To Plunder Loot
Date: August 18
Field: Mullen's Park
Time: 12:00P
Weather: Sunny and warm
The Dirty Pirates battle back to take a one run lead in the 5th, but a 4 run 6th, and 7 run 7th by the Shockers stalled their comeback.
The Pirates, playing flat while suffering from "tournament hangover" surrendered game 1 to the Shockers. John C started in the circle and once again struggled with his command. "It's not walks..." said John C, "I'm missing my locations in the zone. There's little room for error..." John C gave up 6 runs in 3 innings of work before turning the game over to Garry S who immediately dropped a pair of 0's on the Shockers allowing the Pirates to take a 1 run lead at the end of the 5th.
The Shockers responded with 4 runs in the top of the 6th to put more pressure on the Pirates. The Pirates regrouped and battled back to a tie after plating 3 runs in the bottom half of the 6th. The Shockers dropped a devastating 7 runs on the Pirates in the top of the 7th with a combination of power and an amazing, if unsustainable ability to hit holes for singles. In fact, the Shockers managed to hit grounders through the infield almost at will. That Garry S is an extreme fly ball pitcher makes the feat all the more impressive. The Pirates could only muster 1 run in the bottom of the 7th for a 17-11 loss.
The Pirates will battle for their playoff lives when both teams meet for the second game of the championship series.
Game 2 and, if necessary, game 3 take place next Sunday, August 25 at Mullen's Park. Game times are TBA.
