Dirty Pirate Hookers: Game 3 Summary
Dirty Pirate Hookers: 12
Poppy's Place: 13
5/13, Tue @ Fireman's Field
The Dirty Pirate Hookers (1-1) took the field on Tuesday night trying to shake off the remnants of the franchise’s first regular season loss taking on Poppy’s Place (2-0) at Firemen’s Field.
In an effort to get the offense going, Coach John C made some changes to the normal DPH lineup. As the visiting team, DPH came to the plate first and the new lineup sputtered like the old one. The Hooker’s would only get one run as new leadoff hitter Ben Ho reached on an error, moved to 3rd on a double by Erika S, and scored on a single by Deryl B.
In a strategic move to help bolster the defense, John C handed the ball to ace closer Ben Ho (0-1, 3.82 ERA) to start the game. The move seemed to pay off, as Ben Ho was dominant through the first 3 innings giving up no runs on just 2 hits. With the defense continuing to post zeroes on the board, the offense seemed to come to life with a 4 run second inning. Singles by Steve F, Jo Ho, and Mike F scored a run and a John C walk loaded the bases, Ben Ho plated them all with a double. This spurt of offense was just a tease, as the Hooker’s would fail to score in 3rd or 4th inning.
Staked to a 5-0 lead, and cruising, the DPH defense took the field in the bottom of the 4th and continued to look like the Hooker’s of old. After 2 outs in the inning, Poppy’s would finally put a run on the board with a solo HR by Case. The HR seemed to stoke the Hooker’s offense, as the bottom of the order re-started the scoring in the top of the 5th. Mike F and John C led off with a single and double respectively. Poor baserunning by Mike F robbed John C of an RBI, but Ben Ho would plate the run on an error followed by an RBI single from Matt T and Erika who scored another run on an out to the right side.
Now with an 8-1 lead, DPH turned an inning much like the bottom of the 4th, holding Poppy’s to another 2-out solo HR by Galinski. In the dugout, Deryl was heard saying "On a short field like this (Firemen’s) balls are going to go out, but 2-out solo shots are the best to give up." It was more of the same in the 6th inning as the Hooker’s and Poppy’s both traded runs. In the top of the 7th, it was the bottom of the order that again started the Hooker rally as sub Pat S. (in for Mike F), John C, Ben Ho, and Lisawitz started the inning with 4 straight singles that scored two runs. The DPH offense was done for the night after a Matt T sacrifice fly.
The Hooker’s took the field in the bottom of the 7th with a seemingly insurmountable 12-3 lead and playing stifling defense. However, Poppy’s had now seen the knuckle ball for 6 innings and early in the inning it was apparent that they were getting their timing down. 5 straight hits to start the inning, along with an error and the lead was now 12-6. Another 3 singles plated 3 more runs, and loaded the bases with 1 out. The offensive onslaught along with the game would come to a shocking end with a Nicoli walk-off, grand slam into the weeds behind Firemen’s short porch in left. Final stats for the inning, 10 runs, on 9 hits, and 2 errors compared to 5 Poppy's hits through the first 6 innings.
It was obvious after the game that the Hooker’s were shocked. Manager John C said "I thought our last loss was tough to stomach, this was awful. Again, errors played a part, it emboldens a team. We need to play smarter in the field, and we need to get our offense clicking..."
A reporter noted that the Hooker’s plated 12 runs in the game, and appeared to be improving, the coach retorted: "You look at the book, and there’s holes throughout, we need to step up and start hitting. We are not a team that puts the ball over the fence. The Hooker’s get on base, and turn the lineup over."
Another reporter asked about leaving Ben Ho in for the fateful 7th inning: "Yeah, I was this close to pulling him. I should’ve pulled him, and given them another look. He pitched a great game, and deserved the win. You just never think you are going to blow a 9 run lead, that’s on me."
Ben Ho was also asked about the fateful 7th inning: "I am a pitcher, if I have a chance to close out a game in the 7th, I want the ball. Those first 6 innings don’t get any more dominant. Our defense was cruising. Poppy’s is a good team, and they are going to hit the ball at some point, it’s slow pitch softball."
As the team left the field, John C.. offered on final tidbit: "If we’re a good team, and I know we are, we’ll come out of this...it’s up to us."
DPH will try to put a stop to the franchise’s first losing streak as they take to the field for a rare Sunday game on May 18th, 4pm, at Legion Field.--BH
