Dirty Pirate Hookers: Game 2 Summary

Dirty Pirate Hookers: Game 2

Dirty Pirate Hookers: 7
Road Warriors: 0

5/5, Thurs, 6:00 PM @ Fireman's

The Dirty Pirate Hookers returned to the site of the dismal end of their '08 season; they were eliminated in Round 1 of the playoffs, where disappointment in the effort of his team forced John C to question the desire and interest of some stalwarts. "That was last year..." said John C, "...a different team. I'm focused on this season and this team..."

With that, the Hookers went to work as Garry S and the "Blond Bomber", Christina C, opened the game with extra base hits and an RBI for Christina. After a fly out by John C and a hard line drive out by Colleen B, Scott J blasted a line drive home run deep to the left side earning the Pirates a 3 spot for their half of the inning.

The Hookers sent Warren S, a Pirate from their revised arsenal, to the mound. Warren was greeted rudely by a hard opposite field smash to right field. The Captain, in full plodding stride, hauled in the loot for the first out of the game. The Road Warriors never again made solid contact as Warren S went to work on a shutout masterpiece.

Shut down in the 2nd, the Pirates plundered two more runs in the 3rd. John C opened the inning by ripping a line drive to center. A fly out by Colleen B brought Scott J to the plate. Jilted from his previous assault, the Road Warriors gingerly pitched to Scott. On a high pitch out of the zone, Scott powered the ball out of the park for his second two run home run. With a 5-0 cushion, Warren continued to work on his gem.

The Pirates set themselves up for a big offensive inning in the top of the 4th when Warren S and Mike F reached base with a pair of singles. Garry S took advantage of soft defense to reach base and plate Warren. With one out and runners on 1st and 3rd, John C stepped in the box and was walked on 4 consecutive balls. After a fly out to left, the bases were loaded with two down for Scott J. In an obvious bush league maneuver by the Road Warriors, they proceeded to "intentionally" walk Scott thereby plating Mike F.

The Captain's vociferous protestations were ignored and the game moved on. "You can't call yourself a Warrior and pull that cowardly crap," said John C, adding "At the very least, Shaye should have been awarded first base to bring up Steve F. That's a poor decision by the ump...but it's his call..."

Regardless, Warren S, now staked to a 7-0 lead, was unfazed; with the help of stellar defensive plays from Garry S and Christina C, Warren continued his pitching classic through 7 innings for a complete game shut out that sent the Road Warriors packing.

After the game, John C was effusive with praise for Warren, "He pitched great, no walks, one hard hit ball, and a shutout. It's tough to top that in slow pitch..." Regarding the Hookers poor offensive start John C said "We're 2-0, that's what matters. But we're leaving too many runners on base...we had a big inning stolen from us...I'm sure we'll improve..."

Warren S was named player of the game and was asked about the shutout. "It felt good. My knuckler wasn't working, so I moved the ball around the zone...we have a good defense...it was a good game."

The Hookers face the Bayside Tigers at the palatial Livingston Stadium for Game 3

Dirty Pirate Hookers: Game 1 Summary

Dirty Pirate Hookers: Opening Day!!!

Dirty Pirate Hookers: 7
Gold Coin Runnings: 6

4/30, Thurs, 6:00 PM @ Bishop Maginn

Spring is a time for renewal...a fitting metaphor for the 2009 Dirty Pirate Hookers.

After a disappointing '08 season and the defection of several players, the loyal core of the Dirty Pirate Hookers re-grouped and rebuilt the team with new friends and talent. Although the roster includes only four players from the original team, the DPH attitude remains the same. Christina C, Steve F, Mike F, and John C moved forward to find new players worthy of the name Dirty Pirate Hooker. "I can't say enough about Christina, Steve, and Mike..." said GM/Manager John C, "their loyalty saved the team. They embody the spirit that was the genesis of the team in the first place...good people and good players who enjoy playing the game to win and having fun..."

The rebuilt roster includes several players new to the league--Colleen B, Kristen D, Shaye H, and Tahnee H and several veteran league players--Garry S, Justin V, Scott J, and Warren S. Despite the many new additions, John C refused to characterize the '09 season as a rebuilding season: "No, I wouldn't say the Hookers are rebuilding...that sounds too much like a built in excuse for failure. We'll win or lose with the talent we have...and though it's early, I like our talent. Furthermore, I want to publically welcome the new Pirates to the team..."

In previous years, the Dirty Pirate Hookers were known for lavish press conferences that among other things, welcomed new players to the team. "Our budget didn't allow for that this season..." said John C, "the sour economy effected our operations, too..."

In contrast to an offseason of change, the Pirates opened their season facing a familiar foe, Gold Coin Runnings (Cool Runnings), with a familiar result--a victory. Gold Coin Runnings were the perfect initiation for the new Pirates and indicative of the rough seas ahead. "They're always a good team--strong offense, tight defense...but I haven't lost to them yet..." said John C, "...and I told a few new Hookers that I didn't plan to start now..." In tried and true DPH fashion, the Pirates won with strong pitching, smart defense, and enough offense.

The Pirates opened the new season with a single to right center and a hard double through the hole by Scott J. Garry S ripped a double past 2B to plate his first RBI's as a Hooker. Gold Coin's response fell short while scoring only a run in their half of the 1st.

The Pirates offense started the top of the 2nd in auspicious fashion when Eric O, Kristen D, and Steve F reached by singles. Steve F's RBI single was all the offense the Hookers could muster as they left the bases loaded. With John C settling in on the mound, Gold Coin was shut out in the bottom of the inning.

The Pirates renewed their assault in the top of the 3rd and plundered 3 more runs on consecutive singles by Christina C and Scott J and a smashed double by Garry S for his 3rd and 4th RBI's of the day. A convenient walk to Steve F plated Garry S for the Hookers 3rd run of the inning. Gold Coin mustered an insufficient 2 run reply as John C regrouped from an opening triple and a pair of singles.

The Pirates pilfered no more runs through the 4th, 5th, and 6th innings. "We'd get runners on..." said the captain "...but we couldn't push them across..." Instead, the Pirates relied on their other strengths--pitching and defense--to maintain the lead through the drought.

Hampered by a tender quad, low draft, and a lack of talent, the captain shrunk a sure HR to a triple to open the top of the 7th. Fortunately, he was bailed out by his willing crew for a much needed insurance run. After a quick out to open the bottom of the 7th, Gold Coin plated a run courtesy of the bottom of their order. John C then coerced a pair of shallow pop ups out of the top of the order to secure the booty. After the game, the captain liked what he saw from the new Pirates while adding "Our offense was sluggish...we stranded too many base runners. Our defense was good, but I know it can be better...but that's minor stuff, it was a good win. The new Hookers did well..."

Game 2 pits the DPH against refugees from the Saturday League: Road Warriors.
