Dirty Pirate Hookers: Game 8 Summary

Dirty Pirate Hookers: Game 8

DPH: 27
Glenmont Beverage: 6

7/12/09, Sunday, 4:00 PM @ Field of Dreams

The Pirates subject their feeble foes to a floggin' and dispense of them with an alacrity usually reserved for slugging cheap grog.

Many games have instances of tension that determine the final outcome. This game was devoid of such drama when the Hookers bombed Glenmont with 22 runs across the first 3 innings. The Pirates' cannoneers were so merciless, they sent seven to the plate in the second without recording an out; their command was such that Glenmont derided themselves with a mock cheer when they induced the first out of the inning. Further, every Hooker scored at least once, drove in at least one run, and reached base by hit or walk at least twice. When the smoke cleared, the Pirates reached base at a rate of 0.688, averaged one base per at bat, and ultimately bombarded Glenmont with 27 runs in 5 innings of a mercy rule shortened game.

The Hookers staunch pitching and defense limited their opponents offense to a scant 6 runs. Before the game started, Glenmont Beverage maintained a firm grip on third place in their division with a +20 run differential. After the devastating defeat, their grip was more tenuous as their differential plummeted to -1.

The Hookers now face an excessively long 2+ week break before battling Justice League on Tuesday, July 28 at Fireman's Field. "I don't like long layoffs..." said manager John C, "...but it's on us to maintain focus and intensity with no excuses."

Earl Weaver - A Mind for the Game

Earl Weaver was the great manager of the Baltimore Orioles from 1968 - 1982 and 1985 - 1986. He, and the great Casey Stengal before him, possessed insightful, statistics oriented approaches to managing in a time before computers, spreadsheets, and stuffy ivy league grads infiltrated the game.

Dirty Pirate Hookers: Game 7 Summary

Dirty Pirate Hookers: Game 7

DPH: 12
Bush League: 5

6/29/09, Monday, 6:00 PM @ Bishop Maginn

The Pirates keel haul their hapless foes.

On a day when Bush League undoubtedly wished the harsh weather ceased to relent, they were completely vanquished by the storming Pirates. In fact, the majority of their runs came courtesy of officiating generosity and two blundered plays by the Hookers' typically staunch outfield.

"The damnedest thing I ever heard..." said manager John C when asked about a very odd call on a play at third, "...you don't base your call on the score..." A close play at third was ruled in favor of Bush League "because the score's not even close..." to quote the umpire "That's not my problem..." said John C, "Call the runner safe or out, don't worry about making the game 'competitive.' I know he wouldn't appreciate a call like that during one of his games."

Additionally, two of Bush League's runs directly resulted from miscommunication in the Hookers' outfield. In the bottom of the 5th, a fly ball by Will M fell between Garry S and John C. "He called for it and I backed off." said Garry S--a statement echoed by John C. Both players called for the ball and both players respected each others call. Painfully, nobody caught it.

Miscommunication by Justin V and Steve F in the bottom of the 7th was much less benign when both players collided. Steve F called for the ball and was positioning himself to catch it when he was called off by Justin V. "Typically the corners should yield to center..." said John C, "...but center has to respect the ability of his corners. It was a timing thing. Most importantly, I don't want anybody getting hurt and I don't anticipate such problems in future games..." Steve F was rattled after the collision, but he quickly collected himself, donned his sun glasses, and resumed play.

Aside from charity and bungled routine plays, the Pirates' defense and pitching dug in and yielded only 4 hits to Bush League. Warren S pitched another dominant game and the Pirates' mastery was such that prior to the altruistic events, Bush League was skunked through the first 4 innings.

The Pirates' cannoneers launched fitful salvos, but the net effect was positive as the Hookers scored in all but one inning. Decisive offensive contributions from Captain Christina C, John C, Justin V, Mike F, Warren S, and a huge 5th inning 2 run double by Tahnee H powered the Hookers over their rivals. Garry S and Steve F hit the ball hard, but went nuclear--launching a series of atom balls. "Between them, they had about 6 hard line drives..." said John C, "...but they hung up a bit and were caught. That's the game, though. Sometimes you do right, but you're still wrong."

Even with the hard luck, the Pirates were never in peril and held a 9 - 0 lead in the 5th before Bush League scored a run.

Much has been made of Bush League's rebuilding season, but roster differences from last season are not so apparent. The biggest difference is in the outfield where Bush League neglected to re-sign Todd S; freeing him to pursue free agency. The core of the team remains the same with some differences on the fringes--a cursory count showed at least 8 holdovers.

The DPH, on the other hand, lost much talent and carry only four players from the '08 roster. Yet team management was adamant to not label this a rebuilding season. Concern for fans and players motivated management to field a competitive team.

Despite their polar positions, however, in a sense both teams left the field very much the same--with perfect records.

Come see your favorite Hookers play their next game at Fireman's Field against Host Rocket, Tuesday, July the 7th.
